play 01 — the scouting report ↴

THE OPPONENT IS A BUDGET LINE.

Every child deserves the chance to run, jump and play. For millions of kids in underprivileged schools across America, that chance simply doesn't exist. Not because anyone decided it — because nobody budgeted for it.

Game film — what we saw

This is the whole gym.

At the schools we visit, "gym class" happens in a room that's also the cafeteria and the auditorium. When the weather's good, it's a cracked blacktop. At one school, the entire gym is a classroom-size trailer — the whole thing. The kids make it work. That's the part that should bother you.

The score at tip-off

The numbers don't cheer for anybody.

<$800
The median yearly PE budget in the under-resourced schools we serve.
FEWER
PE opportunities in schools serving the most economically disadvantaged students than in wealthier schools — dramatically fewer. That's not a coincidence. It's a gap we can close.
$33
Lifetime return, in healthcare savings and improved outcomes, for every $1 invested in school-based physical activity programs.
The research is clear

Kids who move do better in class.

Children who are physically active perform better academically, attend school more consistently, and are far less likely to struggle with anxiety and depression. The equipment is the small part. What it buys is a kid better focused in the classroom, a healthier body, and a belief that they matter.

x

NO EQUIPMENT

A PE budget that can't replace a flat ball, let alone outfit a class of thirty.

x

NO ROOM TO PLAY

Gyms that are cafeterias. Blacktops that are cracked. Nowhere for a whole school to move.

x

TEAMS OF ONE

PE teachers covering the gap alone, often out of their own pockets. Nobody wins playing one-on-five.
